Chairman’s Award prize money at work in the community

Prize money from the 2016 Chairman’s Awards for HSSE Excellence is going towards a variety of community projects supported by the winning companies.

The staff of first prize-winner GAC EnvironHull voted to make their donation to World Child Cancer (WCC). The charity helps some of the poorest, most vulnerable children and their families worldwide access cancer diagnosis, treatment and support, by developing partnerships between hospitals in the developed and developing worlds. It funds awareness programmes, advocacy, treatment costs, ward equipment and essential staff, whilst also helping families during their difficult times.

GAC Singapore is using its runner-up prize money to support up to five children for a year at the TFC-together orphanage in Siem Reap, Cambodia. MD Henrik Althen chose the orphanage after visiting it last year to see the work they do. During his visit he was struck by the integrity and passion of the people running the orphanage and the huge difference it makes to the children it helps.

The second runner-up, GAC Samudera Logistics, used its prize money to provide financial support to Yayasan Heesu Cahaya Cinta, a home for children with special needs about 1.5 hours’ drive from Bekasi in Indonesia. Staff from the company recently visited the home to deliver food, medicine and clothes and took the opportunity to spend some time playing with the children.

GAC Samudera President Director, Hari Krishnan, says:

“As a business, we do not operate in silo, but as part of a larger community. It is therefore our responsibility to give back to this community.”
