GAC handles giant gearbox round trip
Staff from GAC Thailand prepare a 37-ton pinion gearbox for a steel rolling mill for the first stage of its journey by road and sea to Germany for an upgrade. The monster machine part was worth more than USD 750,000.
At the customer’s factory, the load was packed and lashed to a low-bed truck for the 60km trip to the port. There, two 35-ton cranes lifted it on to a waiting RORO vessel. The road trip took place at night with a police escort in accordance with local traffic laws for vehicles carrying heavy loads. All export clearance formalities were taken care of by GAC Thailand, including exemption from tax and duties for goods returning to the country.
After being refurbished in Germany, the gearbox again became GAC’s responsibility for delivery back to Thailand.
Thanks to the success of the task, the customer has already appointed GAC to handle another shipment.
